Batavia R/C is a group of folks dedicated to extracting the most fun out of flying and each other. We enjoy flying, learning, trading stories and joking with each other. We especially like to show off our flying skills, so come on out and enjoy a days flying or watching. All are welcome to watch and enjoy the fun. Have a seat out of the sun in the pavilion.
Some tips for flying at local funflys. All are invited to fly and although you might find it intimidating, there is no more fun flying than at a funfly.
Have a buddy be your wingman and monitor the field for you to keep you safe.
Fly as you always do - you're flying for yourself, not for the spectators. There is no reason to risk you plane with a crash. Just enjoy your flying as you normally do and the crowd will sink away.
Fly your easiest plane the first time. You shouldn't care about impressing the crowd - R/C flyers love all types of planes and a Cub is as interesting to watch as many other planes.
You'll have to know the pattern, if you are not sure - ask before taking off. Left to right means close to you you will fly from your left to the right, and circle right to left far from you in a circle. Land from left to right. And vice versa. The pattern may change based on the wind, you'll always land into the wind closest to you.
Don't do loops if someone is following you.
Watch the other flyers and listen to your spotter.
Your spotter should ONLY talk about your flying and who may be in your flight path, no chit chat. It takes work to be a good spotter. Use terms like Far, Near, High, Low and provide words of encouragement. "Your on a good line - keep that line, your wide open for altitude", "Traffic coming up either climb or slow down", "Fast mover coming from behind you at your altitude - climb or dive".
Your spotter should retrieve the plane and do all the communications to other flyers "Man on the field", "Low Pass", "Taking off", "Landing from your left". You concentrate on flying and communicating to your spotter.
OK - now get out there and fly ! It is alot of fun and after your first five FunFly flights - you'll be addicted !
Feb '10- Check out NY in this months AMA mag to see our groups photo and funfly info from last summer. Everyone should be proud of all the work done to maintain such a great club. Jan 30,'10- Update
Welcome to 2010. Some things to think about over the winter.
March 14 - We gain an evening hour of light - temps will average 50 and should be good for daily flying. We get ocassional breaks in the winter - be prepared to fly. 30 degrees is flyable if you can get in the field and you dress very warmly.
Monthly meetings - we have one coming up Wednesday. Bring something to show off or help educate other club members. We have alot of talent in the club - share your knowledge, experience, joy for the hobby.
Gary or Bob were unable to accept the presidency. Dick Smith has stepped up to take on the role with unanamous vote at the club meeting. Dick - we look forward to a wonderful summer. Clear the political agenda, so we can see the sky !
We discussed potentially raising dues from $ 50. Lots of discussion and we decided to wait before making a final decision. The key issue is the Hot Dog stand is not garaunteed income and without that income we will need to raise dues or drop services. We decided to drop the $150 purchased intended for give aways for the June FunFly. Ted and Michelle do a wonderful job raising donations and that should suffice for give aways and potentially more focus on raffles.
Joe was presented with a gift certificate for dinner out with his wife in appreciation of his years of service as President. He graciously endured a mini-roast and lots of laughs.
It was decided that there would be a board and the board members are : Dick Smith, Joe Palmer, Jay Fisher, Ron Lawrence, and Bob Ray.
We discussed a club trailer, but given the previous discussion on raising dues, we decided we'd have to make due with trucks and potentially renting a trailer for the hot dog fund raiser.
We discussed the property owners willingness to put a warning horn and blinking lights that can be triggered by full scale airplanes preparing to land and manually. It's dangerous to be mowing if a plane does not circle the field. Joe had one close call this past summer. If the property owner runs electric for a horn, we can tap in for an electric charge station.
We'd like two way radios for our events, the kind that fit over the ear. This was tabled due to lack of funds.
Some of the Batavia boys enjoyed indoor flying this past Sunday !

Batavia R/C FunFly Recap
The FunFly was a great success. We had many friends from far and near visit for two days and enjoy flying. We provided LOTS of great prizes to all who flew, with raffles and free pilot lunch.
Bob McClure did us the honor of one of his fantistic videos - Thanks Bob !
Indoor flying
Our members are enjoying indoor flying every Mon/Thurs. You can see a video of Ted flying indoors:
I hope to capture more video and photos soon, unfortunately my vid cam crapped out, and lost my still camera. I have replace both, and should be getting high def video and more photos shortly. Say Cheese :)
Their web guy (Bob McClure) is on top of events and I shamelessly plagerize many local events from their event page. Their funflys are excellent, I highly recommend we all attend them in the coming year and enjoy their hospitality during their funflys.
Indoor flying for members
Members - be sure to check the new schedule of indoor flying dates. Note that the days are now Mondays and Thursdays 8-10. We are not flying on Fridays. Talk to Joe Palmer if you have questions.
Guys Helping at Batavia
Just ask someone for help and this is likely what will occur at Batavia R/C Club.
Dick Ash lands at Batavia R/C field
I showed up at the field to find this gorgeous 1940 Waco owned and flown by Dick Ash parked at the end of our flying field.
Wow - is anyone else as exhausted from this event ? I'm proud to say we had outstanding attendance by all members of the Batavia R/C crew at the FunFly. We had very high temps 91, and very very high winds. The wind made the high temps bearable, and made flying a bit challenging. At the highest point we hit 32 mph. Many of us enjoyed the extra boost in speed and very few flew under 100 mph. We had rare points with no flying and some guys hovering their airplanes in the wind.
Many Thanks go to Devin McGrath (DevinRocks.Com) for performing in super high winds and all of us totally enjoyed his skillful flying. He flew a 102" QQ Yak, DA 100cc
Who do ya think is the teacher and the student ? Ted is here on the buddy box with a very experienced Henrietta heli flyer. He was offering heli training to anyone who wanted it - and flying in high winds.
