Batavia R/C Flying Club :

Batavia R/C is a group of folks dedicated to extracting the most fun out of flying and each other. We enjoy flying, learning, trading stories and joking with each other. We especially like to show off our flying skills, so come on out and enjoy a days flying or watching. All are welcome to watch and enjoy the fun.

We've grown from 22 to 36 members in one year with plenty of room for more growth.

FunFly - Batavia RC - FunFly - JUNE 7, 8 (Sat, Sun)

Wow - is anyone else as exhausted from this event ? I'm proud to say we had outstanding attendance by all members of the Batavia R/C crew at the FunFly. We had very high temps 91, and very very high winds. The wind made the high temps bearable, and made flying a bit challenging. At the highest point we hit 32 mph. Many of us enjoyed the extra boost in speed and very few flew under 100 mph. We had rare points with no flying and some guys hovering their airplanes in the wind.

Many Thanks go to Devin McGrath (DevinRocks.Com) for performing in super high winds and all of us totally enjoyed his skillful flying. He flew a 102" QQ Yak, DA 100cc

Who do ya think is the teacher and the student ? Ted is here on the buddy box with a very experienced Henrietta heli flyer. He was offering heli training to anyone who wanted it - and flying in high winds.

April 3, 08

ANNOUNCEMENT: Tonights meeting is moved to APRIL 10th. Same location, and time.

Looks like the weather is changing rapidly, in our favor. Today Thursday 56, then 45, and Sat and Sun of 52 and 58 ! All sunny days ! Can someone please drop by the field and send me a report of the conditions and what you think we need to do to get it flyable ? Do we have a method of rolling the field ? Do we need a work day to replace divots ? Dang spring just sprung up on me. I have my plane pez dispensor filled and raring to get airborne.

I've seen some of the speed demons Gary is planning for this year. I recommend we put three spotters with bull horns around him, and build a fall out shelter :) Ted and Vinnie (Me) are also planning on proving who top gun is in the Jet arena. I threw down the gauntlet claiming I'll bee keeping up with those 130 mph speed demons from West of us, and he gladly accepted the challenge. Actually I'm more psyched just to do some formation flying with him.

You might find a bunch of us are going to be getting silly with Flying Wings this summer. These are inexpensive wings that we will overpower and not care if we smack into each other. Don't worry we'll be person safe, but plane crazy.

I'm still hoping more members will fill out the member information and provide photos or catch me at the field to take both. We can sit down for five minutes and I will catch your info and get to know you a little better.

I want to know what projects everyone is working on. So I'll have my reporter hat on during some of the time I should be causing my planes physical stress.

I've talked to lots of folks about joining Batavia R/C this year and I think our numbers will increase again this year.

March 11, 08

Dr Louis Green, a Batavia R/C member for about 30 years, died today. Lou was liked by all and will be missed. God Bless and happy flying Lou. May all your landings be soft ones. Look down every once in a while and send us gentle breezes.

Indoor Flying:

Ted Ryan's quote says it all: "I thought I new how to fly, until I started flying indoors".

It's a very humbling experience to fly a plane indoors. But we have a group of guys keeping the cob webs off their transmitters. The key is to build LIGHT - 8 oz's is about the top end of the build you want. The "Pro's" are down around 4-5 oz's. This means 2mm depron, tiny motor, 10 amp ESC, little 400 mah 20C, 2S or 3S lipo and 5 gram servos. The servos should be pretty quick - .10 is recommended.

If you've hung in there - you are surely learning to use your rudder. I find it easiest to do a flat turn - rudder left and aileron right. I can come very close to the wall and spin on a dime. My plane is to heavy though 10-11 oz's, so it noses in very often and has to be flown too fast. Talk to Ted or Ron and now Joe Palmer is an indoor wizard.

Congrats to you guys who stuck it out and invested in indoor flying. I think most of us are ready for the big armory event in March. Check it out on the Event page.

Jan 10, 08

MEMBERS: Happy New Year all! Be sure to stop out one of the MANY nights during indoor flying. I have gotten many reports of guys enjoying the indoor flying Joe has setup. Be sure to test and trim your plane outdoors before attempting indoor flying. It's not easy - but alot of fun with the right rig. Weight is your enemy - shoot for sub 8 oz's and the lighter the better. Guys shave grams on indoor planes.

Please check the Members only area for dates of the indoor flying fests. Guys are bringing out their small helis for indoor as well.

Updated information in Members Only page for indoor flying

Dec 12, 07 - Information for Batavia R/C Club Members

Batavia R/C members- go to Members Only page for info from Joe on indoor flying.

Dec 7, 07 - Club Meeting

  • Meeting held at 7pm. About 20 members attended. Joe Palmer announced details on his work to get us an indoor flying location in Batavia and we should be flying there very soon. I started a discussion thread on RCGroups to get advice from anyone with experience in indoor flys. Click Here to go to the discussion.
Monitor BataviaRC for updated info from Joe.
  • We discussed our efforts to start helping kids learn the joy of R/C. We intend to use the indoor flying time to help kids build and fly small planes and if we are fortunate some blue core inventions. We have alot of research and experimentation to decide what works best. We may build club indoor planes and run trainer boxes to help kids fly. Lots of other ideas. Talk to Gary if you have ideas.
  • Gary demo'd his Blue Core Jet and Hell Cat - absolutely gorgeous planes.
  • Bud showed his newly built Ultimate Bipe .50 size.
  • We passed around a 48cc single cylinder engine - very cool.
  • Various other discussions questions and answers to questions -recommendations for the web site which has prompted my adding a Stat Counter, and learning about various other feeds we can tap into - Discussion threads, weather and more soon.

West of us R/C Club Visit to Batavia - Mon, Nov 18th

We had a crew of guys come visit us on 18th. These guys fly really fast Jets. I've seen extreme electric flying since I know guys who are majorly into speed. These guys from the Buffalo area are among the fastest Jet flyers I've ever seen. I will post video proof of this once I get more details. The video is ready - just some details are missing. WALT - Email me !

First up was a foamie FunJet. This is a nice small foam plane that is designed for park flying of arond 50-70 mph. Many guys are approaching 100 mph on high power setups. Ted Ryan has one that is around 100 mph. Well the Jet I video'd hit 130 mph ! They used a Mega 4 turn motor on 8 S ! That's gotta be two lbs of batteries and close to 30 volts at 30 amps or 900 Watts of power.

Second Walt flew his MicroJet. It was getting dark so he didn't get a really good demo of the speed of this plane but it is a smaller Jet - much more difficult to control or see, and runs on 4S. I had a hard time tracking it and it did disappear in the clouds a few times.

I will certainly try to get these guys to put on a demo at our FunFly in '08.

Flying - Status - Sun Nov, 3rd (by Vinnie Finn)

The weather was excellent, then got a little colder - but as long as you had a jacket - very flyable. I maidened my Super Chipmunk - 63" WS Surpass 91 Four Stroke, Ted Ryan was an excellent crutch and an angel on my shoulder to make sure all was successful. He couldn't keep my thumbs from shaking though - maybe next time I use some thumb splints ;)

Ted Ryan and Vinnie Finn (me) put on a little high speed electric Jet demo of formation flying which I thoroughly enjoyed, fast low synchronized flybys, loops in front of the pits, inverted flybys (Ted), rolls and one ground pounding. I pounded my Jet into the turf - low roll and dive at about 80mph. I'll pull another from my TwinJet pez dispensor and build another or repair the current Franken-Jet.

Jerry Slavik flew his Electric Corsair - a thing of beauty and speed. Jerry loves high speed and I'd love to see anyone else in the club fly faster or lower at high speed than Jerry can. Link to Photo Ask him to fly his Texan - wow!

Ted's brother Pat from PA got some time on his new electric trainer.

Dan Ryan and his Son Joey flew their Piggy. Dan loves the Piggy and flys it like a pro. Joey had some long walks after the battery gave out while way out near the tree line. Joey is doing great and will be teaching us soon enough. Don stopped out to watch for a while after the Swap Meet. I may have missed all of what was going on since flying was continuous, but Clair Ryan (Ted, Dan's Dad) - flew for a while and the peanut gallery was in full swing giving each of us tips on how to fly and in some cases 2 feet 100 mph fly bys were not low enough or fast enough :) hmmmm

Another GREAT DAY !

ANYONE - wanting to provide a days flight status - addition or corrections to posted ones - please email me: Vinnie Finn

These will be moved shortly to an appropriate menu selection - keep an eye open for it.

Proposed Winter Flying

We're hope to continue flying through out the Winter. Rig a plane with Ski's or Floats to land on snow. I think we should call this group the "Numb Nuts". Maybe we can get some plastic covering for the pavilion and a heater and bring out hot cider. We could get a small patch for your Batavia R/C hat if you come out once during the cold months - Dec..Feb.

Batavia R/C YOUTH PROGRAM

If you fly - you know that any R/C flyer loves to teach others how to succeed in flying. It's not easy but there are very specific steps you can take to flying like a pro. Batavia R/C is very interested in sharing the many years of experience building and flying R/C airplanes with the Youth of the area. We've decided to start a Youth Program and find some local schools in which we can share the joy of building and flying. Contact Gary Bobzin at 768-4799 if you have ideas on how we can "give back" to the local Youth Community.

And you adults that want to fly - just come one out to one of our Club Meetings or the flying field and chat it up with the guys. They'll tell you more than enough to fill your brain. We never stop learning or improving our skills.
